Located on the north east of the island between the sea and the mountains, Bastia is the second largest city on the island and is well worth a visit to enjoy Corsican culture. The 19th Century Square, Place St Nicolas, sprawls along the waterfront between the harbour and the ferry terminal. It’s the perfect spot to pull up a chair in the sunshine and relax with a drink. This area is home to many cafés, shops and bars and a traditional flea market is held here every Sunday. South of Place St Nicolas is the Place de l’Hotel de Ville. A traditional French market is held here every weekend – perfect for picking up a souvenir or two to take home.

Ajaccio is the capital of Corsica and has an air of the Côte d’Azur about it with a beautiful landscape, sweeping golden beaches and lively waterfront cafés. The city’s claim to fame is that the French emperor Napoléon Bonaparte was born here in 1769. The family home that he grew up in - Casa Buonaparte – has now been turned into a museum.

Corte is situated high in the mountains and is often referred to as the heart and soul of Corsica. This stunning mountain top city is home to a university which gives it a lively and cosmopolitan feel. It is also home to many cafés and restaurants – perfect for taking a seat at to watch the world go by.

For an authentic taste of Corsican life, head for the tiny fishing village of Erbalunga on the east coast. Once the most important harbour on the island, it’s now a peaceful haven with a network of squares and tiny alleyways. In August the village comes alive with a jazz festival. It’s also popular for those seeking a bit more activity with a riding school – the organised treks take you up into the mountains or along the beautiful sandy beaches.

The tourist capital of Corsica is a bustling city, heavily influenced by the glitz of the Côte d’Azur. It’s a magnet for the super-rich who sail their luxurious yachts from St Tropez and dock them in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. One of the most striking sights is the Citadel set high above the city, offering excellent viewpoints over the area from its bastions. The liveliest part of Calvi is Quai Landry – filled with restaurants, bars, cafés, shops and hotels it’s a fantastic spot to enjoy a drink and a spot of people watching. The biggest draw of Calvi is its stunning 4 mile white sandy beach. The shallow waters are perfect for cooling off in on a hot summer’s afternoon.
