This is an area of breathtaking natural beauty, with wide open spaces, clear
flowing rivers and an abundance of wildlife. Remains of remarkable
Roman architecture are still evident in many towns, and ruins of medieval
castles and tiny villages cling to the sides of cliffs.
Pont du Gard – a huge, three tiered aqueduct
constructed by the Romans to supply water to Nîmes. The best
view is from a hill on the northern side - on hot days, enjoy a cooling
swim in the river.
Avignon – is an artistic and cultural centre
surrounded by 14th century ramparts. The first bridge to span the
Rhône was built here in the 12th century - visit its remains
and the small chapel which stands on the second pillar.
Gorges du Tarn – the best known natural phenomena
of the area stretch for 30 miles between Florac and Le Rozier. You
will find a succession of beautiful viewpoints and many footpaths
to
explore.
St Jean du Gard – catch Le Train à Vapeur
des Cévennes from this bright and cheerful town, and chug through
the spectacular scenery of the Vallée des Gordons in an old
fashioned steam train.
Pont d’Arc – a magnificent natural arch
with many pathways leading down to its base. One of the best ways
to enjoy its natural beauty is from the clear waters - take an organised
canoe descent.
Roquefort – is the village where the famous
blue cheese is made. Visit the caves of La Societé where it
is matured for a guided tour through the process and a delicious tasting
session.
