This is an area of outstanding natural beauty, a land rich in history
and culture. Ancient fortresses watch over meandering rivers and charming
villages of golden stone. One of the best ways to enjoy the vivid
and
varied scenery is to take to the water and explore by boat or canoe.
Roque Gageac – regularly voted France’s
prettiest village, clinging precariously to a rock face overlooking
the Dordogne, this is an artist’s paradise with many small galleries
and good restaurants.
Sarlat – a beautiful town carved from golden
stone and full of gothic
and renaissance buildings. This makes for an enchanting visit, with
narrow, winding streets and a vibrant market every Saturday.
Fôret des Singes – see Barbary Macaques
monkeys roam freely in their natural habitat at this park. Wander
through the forest and feed them popcorn.
Domme – a medieval village, dominating the
Dordogne valley from a hill top position. The small streets bloom
with summer flowers and offer
exceptional views over the river and valley.
Grotte du Grand Roc – a cave with 40m of tunnels and
a beautiful collection of stalagmites and stalactites. From the entrance,
you get
stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
Rocamadour –
is an extraordinary village that clings to the side of a cliff.
This has been a
pilgrimage site since the 12th century and much of its medieval splendour
still remains. Pilgrims climb up the Via Sancta, leading to the
main
square, by kneeling on every one of the 216 steps.
