Celebrate Bastille Day
Continuing with our countdown of things you have to try on a Canvas Holiday, #7 is rather a special one. Bastille Day on 14th July, is France’s national holiday, and they love to celebrate it! And if you happen to be in France on holiday at the time, you’ll be celebrating too!
The actual date commemorates the storming of the Bastille (a Parisian prison) in 1789, which was a pivotal event at the start of the French revolution, and marks the start of the modern French republic. The main celebrations take place in Paris – a large military parade, opened by the president, takes place down the Champs d’Elysées, and the celebrations end with a huge fireworks display as night falls.
Outside of Paris, pack a picnics and mix with the locals! Most towns and villages offer fireworks displays and dances in the town hall – everyone is welcome!
It’s worth mentioning that Bastille Day is a public holiday in France, so be prepared for shops and restaurants to be closed.
