Deep in central France, the Cévennes National Park is an unspoilt mountain area that attracts nature lovers, walkers and adventure seekers. The area is covered by thousands of miles of footpaths, some which leave directly from Camping Val de Cantobre, looping through tree covered slopes, dry stone terraces, isolated hamlets and with plenty of gorgeous flowers and wildlife to see en route. It’s a great area for keen bird watchers.
For those of you that like to enjoy your holidays on the water, the real draw to the area are the Ardèche Gorges which are sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon of France – dramatic cliffs and surroundings with the peaceful tranquillity of the River Ardèche flowing through the bottom. The Gorges du Tarn, a 45 minute drive away from the site, are a must see. The drive itself is incredible but may not be for the faint hearted – all roads in the area are on the rather twisty side but do have the advantage of having stunning views. The Gorges du Tarn are the perfect spot for either enjoying the area from the water or on foot on one of the many walking trails. Make sure you take your camera! It’s a great spot for a family kayaking trip – the river is for the most part calm meaning it’s suitable for everyone. For those that want a bit more adventure, the bubbling rapids will help get the adrenaline going.
There are lots of companies in the area offering canoe or kayak hire so you can paddle at your own pace, or you can enjoy a full day excursion with a guide. It’s best to check at your campsite reception for advice on who to go with. At Camping Val de Cantobre the staff onsite are brilliant for giving advice and recommendations on what to see and do in the area.
Within walking distance of the campsite is the pretty town of Nant. It can be easily reached on foot along a path directly from the site. Apparently the bakery in Nant is worth the trip alone! We’ll be trying that out next time we’re there! There are also bars, restaurants and shops here too. A couple of restaurants that past Canvas customers have recommended are ‘Restaurant le Durzon’ and Le Petit Nantais.
A bit about Camping Val de Cantobre
The campsite itself has been loved by Canvas customers for over 36 years. Even though there’s lots to see in the surrounding areas, there’s plenty to keep you entertained onsite too. During July and August there is onsite entertainment during the day and evenings. The pool complex is fab and has waterslides and a wild water area. It’s picturesque location means that if you don’t fancy getting wet, you can rest on the pool side and soak up the views and hopefully sunshine too!
