Reading and holidays just go together. As a child, I used to raid the shelves of the local library for a big collection of books I hadn’t read before my own holidays. Some of my earliest delves into adult fiction were books Mum & Dad took on holiday to read – I remember one break in Brittany where we all read the mighty ‘Pillars of the Earth’ by Ken Follet.
So as its World Book Day, I thought it would be a good opportunity to round up 5 great children’s books – holiday-themed of course!
#1. The Snail & the Whale – Julia Donaldson
This is a firm bedtime favourite with my 2 year olds! It’s a wonderful tale of the snail with an itchy foot who hitches a lift around the world on the ‘tail of a grey-blue humpback whale’.
#2. Mr Bears Holiday – Debi Gliori
Mr Bear and his family set off for a lovely camping holiday – but unfortunately, it doesn’t quite go to plan, and they return home in need of another holiday! (Hopefully this won’t be true of your camping holiday with Canvas of course!)
#3. Barry Loser and the Holiday of Doom – Jim Smith
One for slightly older kids. It’s the 5th in the Barry Loser series – Barry invites all his friends on a holiday in his family caravan, but it doesn’t quite go how he imagined!
#4. My Funny Family on Holiday – Chris Higgins
The Butterfield family are going on their family holiday to Cornwall – and Mattie has plenty to worry about as usual! Also aimed at the 7+ market – it’s a lovely story about holidays away from a high-tech lifestyle.
#5. Enid Blyton’s Holiday Stories
I thought I’d include this lovely series of short stories, mainly because I was a massive Enid Blyton fan as a child! The great thing about short stories is you can read a different one each night – discover enchanted ice-creams, sandcastles on the beach and lots of holiday fun!
Of course this is just a dip in the ocean of kids’ holiday fiction – are there any you’d add to the list? We’d love to hear about them!
