When it comes to a holiday in the sun, Spain is one of the UK’s favourite destinations. From its moreish cuisine to its laidback culture and gorgeous natural scenery, the country has it all – especially if you’re after beach destinations with something for every member of your family to enjoy.
Spain has over 5000km of coastline and the highest number of blue flag beaches on the planet, meaning there’s plenty of bustling seaside resorts and secluded coves to choose from. Need a hand finding the best spots? Whether sandcastles or sunset cocktails are on your agenda, here’s our pick of some the best beaches in Spain.
1. Playa de Altafulla, Costa Dorado
Playa de Altafulla along the Costa Dorado is one of Spain’s prettiest blue flag beaches that’s just perfect for a family day out. Found next door to busier Playa de Tamarit, it’s blessed with shallow waters and handy facilities that range from disabled access and free parking to seaside restaurants and water sports equipment hire.
2. Playa de Roses, Costa Brava
This beach forms part of the Bay of Roses, a stunning region that’s listed as one of the most beautiful bays in the world by UNESCO. Playa de Roses is found in the town of the same name and is actually split into three idyllic coves with fine white sand ideal for building castles.
3. Playa Paraiso, Murcia
If you’re holidaying in Murcia, head to La Manga del Mar Menor, a narrow spit of land that’s home to a handful of great beaches – including Playa Paraiso. The sheltered bay boasts warm water and tiny waves, making it perfect for little ones who like to paddle.
4. Playa Gran, Costa Brava
The main beach in popular Platja d’Aro, sandy Playa Gran stretches for over 2km and is jam-packed with amenities for a family day out. You’ll find plenty of eateries along the promenade, plus older kids can have fun swimming out to the diving platforms just offshore.
5. Playa de Xeraco, Valencia
Found just along the coast from Benidorm, Xeraco is a seaside destination made up of a quaint traditional village and a newer resort with all the facilities you’ll need for day in the sun. Playa de Xeraco is a large, unspoilt beach complete with picturesque sand dunes, clear waters and various relaxed beach bars that open in the summer months.
6. Playa de Pals, Costa Brava
Pals has long been one of the best coastal resorts in Costa Brava – and that’s no surprise with its spacious sandy beach. As well as a mix of cafés and restaurants along the shore that’ll keep little (and big) tummies satisfied, the beach is also a brilliant spot for water sports if older kids fancy an adventure out on the ocean.
7. Playa de Trengandin, Bay of Biscay
If you prefer wilder beaches with plenty of space for your kids to run around, Playa de Trengandin on Spain’s north coast is ideal. It offers up several kilometres of dunes and shoreline set within a nature reserve, plus clean water that’s typically calm enough for even the smallest children to splash around in. Bringing your dog on holiday? A section of the beach is also canine-friendly.
