Want to get away from it all, but only have a limited budget to play with? No worries. With so many cheap holiday destinations in Europe, there’s always somewhere you can jet off to without breaking the bank, whether it’s for a family getaway or a romantic retreat.
From Portugal’s most historic city to Italy’s second largest island, here’s a few cheap places to go on holiday to put on your bucket list.
1. Porto, Portugal
While Portugal’s capital can be a bit pricey to visit, especially during peak season, lesser known Porto is a much more budget-friendly option. It’s located on the north coast and is full of historical treasures, from the city’s world-famous port houses to the wonderfully ornate Lello Bookstore that dates back to 1869.
Want to get outdoors? Head to the Douro Valley for wine tasting or check out one of the great beaches just along the coast from Porto. As well as cheap flights and attractions, you can save money by opting for a camping holiday at our Orbitur Angeiras campsite that’s just 8km from the city centre.
2. Valletta, Malta
Malta is widely considered one of the best cheap holiday destinations in Europe thanks to a combination of cheap flights and a low cost of living. The country is pretty compact (it’s the tenth smallest island nation in the world) meaning you can easily stay in a more affordable area and not have to journey too far to holiday hotspots like the idyllic Blue Lagoon.
Self-catering is a great way to save money on holiday and you’ll find plenty of options in Valletta (Malta’s capital) and nearby St Paul’s Bay.
3. Brittany, France
If you’re after a change of scene that doesn’t require you to book flights or an expensive car hire, you can’t go wrong with Brittany. The French region is just across the Channel and it’s full of charming towns, historic relics and vast sandy beaches.
You don’t have to spend a penny exploring the Medieval streets of cities like Rennes and Brest, plus you’ll find the beautifully rugged Côte du Granit Rose is wonderful for cliff walks and family days at the beach. Stay along the coast at Camping La Baie de Kernic or check into one of our three great campsites near Saint Malo.
4. Budapest, Hungary
Many cheap holiday destinations are located in Eastern Europe – including beautiful Budapest. The historic capital of Hungary sits on the River Danube and it’s famous for its thermal baths and elegant architecture.
Unlike many cities, Budapest’s attractions are very affordable or sometimes even free. You’ll also find eating out in the city is pocket-friendly – think £2 for a pint and under £10 for a meal. The city is largely walkable, but if you’d rather take public transport, a 24-hour bus pass is less than a fiver.
5. Sardinia, Italy
There are so many reasons to visit Italy, from the mouth-watering cuisine to the fascinating heritage sites. If you’re after an affordable destination that offers all that and more, Sardinia could be for you. Located just off the west coast of mainland Italy, it’s the second biggest island in the Mediterranean and a popular pick for tourists after authentic Italy at a lower price.
While cities like Cagliari and Olbia can be pricier to stay in, smaller resort towns often have plenty of affordable accommodation. You’ll even find three Canvas Holidays campsites in Sardinia, including Camping Tonnara on picturesque Sant’Antioco.
