Why we love camping

We ❤️ camping!

Well of course we’d say that. But it’s true, we do. And we want you to love camping too.

If you’ve never tried this type of holiday before, you might be turning your nose up about the effort involved with a camping holiday. Pitching a tent in the rain? No thanks. Soggy socks? Eugh! Cold nights sleeping on the floor? It’s meant to be a holiday…

Well think again!

Because a Canvas holiday couldn’t be more different.

We give you the freedom of camping without the feeling of having to rough it.

Picture yourself relaxing in luxury accommodation, surrounded by beautiful countryside, enjoying a glass of local wine while the barbecue sizzles and the children play nearby.

Adventures in the rain – a Lake Garda special!

YOU can still have awesome outdoor adventures in the rain.

Being adventurous is simply a mindset – a determination to overcome obstacles and squeeze every last drop of fun out of any situation.

And that is the approach my brother Adam and I have taken to the first three days of our trip to Lake Garda with Canvas Holidays.

The weather has been, well, dramatic – thunder has roared, fork lightning has flashed and torrential downpours have soaked everything in sight. But the adventure show has continued. While other gloomy holidaymakers have wrapped themselves in blankets, looking up from their sun beds accusingly at the grey skies, we’ve been out exploring the best Lake Garda has to offer. Mountain trekking, lakeside walks, refreshing swims and paddle boarding have been on the adventure menu – and every tasty course has satisfied our hunger for outdoorsy excitement.

The Canvas Guide to eating in France

If there are two words that go together in the holiday dictionary it’s ‘food’ and ‘France’. Yet when it comes to deciding what to eat and drink on holiday, it can be daunting venturing into the unknown. To  give you a helping hand,  we’ve come up with the Canvas guide to enjoying the delicious local food of France.

Rule one: Keep it simple

BaguettesAll you really need for the perfect lunch is some fresh bread, a piece of cheese, sausage or ham and a bottle of local wine, or something soft. I love getting a small glass bottle of Orangina with my lunch on holiday, it always reminds me of my childhood holidays to France.

What’s your favourite bbq food?

When the sun shines, it doesn’t take too long before the familiar smell of barbecue starts wafting through the air. There’s something about relaxing outside with a cool drink in your hand, friends and family around and the smell of your food cooking that makes you feel so good!

Being based in Scotland though, the opportunity for barbecuing doesn’t arise too often so holidays are the perfect chance to dine al fresco with the delicious smell of meats, veggies and sweet treats wafting through the sunny, chilled-out holiday evening air. Plus camping holidays and barbecues go hand in hand.

My teenage holiday diary – Camping la Grande Metairie

As a teenager, I know how easily and quickly we can get bored. The prospect of two weeks without Facebook, friends or a TV just seems unthinkable. We like going on holiday, but we need stuff to do. And no one wants to hang out with their parents for two weeks. Do they?

My parents have been taking my sister Megan and I on camping holidays since I can remember, so I know a Canvas holiday is anything but boring. In fact it’s GREAT for us teenagers. There’s loads to do!

Weekend escapes

Sometimes you need time out. The chance to leave everyday stresses behind. A short break is a great way to visit new destinations and experience different things without breaking the bank. Just a few days away can make the world of difference.

Imagine getting back to work with stories of sipping a cocktail while the Mediterranean waves lap nearby, or strolling down the Champs-Elysees, stopping for a French pastry along the way. Sure beats spending the weekend cleaning the house!

Camping might not be the obvious choice for a short break holiday. But with easy access to airports and ferry ports, lots to do and plenty of places to explore; it’s time to think again.

A day out in Carcassonne, Languedoc-Roussillon

Janine Marsh, the editor of www.thegoodlifefrance.com and a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, tells us why a day trip to Carcassonne is a must.

The Languedoc region is often called the real south of France. It covers a wide area and has many personalities – more vineyards than anywhere in the world, rugged mountains, huge lakes, spectacular gorges and elegant cities. It is a region with a fascinating heritage and the ancient walled city of Carcassonne is one of the most impressive jewels in its crown.
