TWhat are the best things to do during a camping holiday in Porto?

In addition to the magnificent Douro River, Porto is rich in a millennial history since this region has been inhabited since the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC. The centre of Porto is quite easily explored on foot or by bike, making it easy to relax while discovering one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal.

Staged on the hills overlooking the river, the charming city centre forms an exceptional urban landscape testifying to a history of two millennia. With a strong link to the sea and anything maritime, and having been baptised "Portus" (port) by the Romans, the city has a wealth of historic attractions such as the cathedral to the Romanesque choir and the neoclassical Stock Exchange, as well as Santa Clara church in the Manueline style that's typical of Portugal.

During your visit to Porto you can enjoy a variety of activities, including a cruise on the Douro, a visit of the port wine cellars (a wine exported all over the world), excursions to the north bank of the Douro and day trips to the Ribeira district. You can also explore the heights of Porto by taking the funicular at the foot of the Dom-Luis bridge. Among the best buildings to visit in the city we recommend the La Sé Cathedral, the Mercado do Bolhao, the Lello bookstore, the Palacio da Bolsa.

A little further afield from Porto, you can explore the Douro Valley which is nicknamed the “Enchanted Valley” for its exceptional natural beauty. Drive along the N108 which runs from Douro to Pinhão for beautiful landscapes and scenery.

Porto is also the ideal starting point to discover the north of Portugal, in particular the cities of Guimarães, with its impressive medieval castle, and Braga with its Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte.
