Popular dog friendly campsites
Whether you’re staying in a mobile home or a tent, camping holidays are ideal for bringing your dogs along. We’ve a number of dog friendly campsites to choose from, perfect for walks by the beach or escaping in the mountains. Here’s a couple of our Canvas favourites…
Camping Duinrell is an exceptional campsite just an hour from Amsterdam in Holland. Set in the lush woodland surroundings of a nature reserve, it’s spacious, grassy emplacements provide plenty of space for the children and dogs to play.
Camping les Etangs Fleuris is a quiet haven located in the depths of rural countryside near the hamlet of Touquin, 40 miles east of Paris, France. The enchanting Disneyland® Paris theme parks are only a 25-minute drive away and pup will enjoy a walk in the Forêt de Crécy.
Getting there with your pooch
Your dog can cross the channel with you in the car via Eurotunnel and most cross channel ferries allow dogs, although they are often expected to stay in the car.
Most trains, trams and metros in Europe allow dogs, but always do your research and check ahead. In many ways, the easiest form of transport when travelling in Europe with a dog is by car - just be very careful, and never leave dogs in a car in warmer or hot weather!
Always check that your travel provider allows pets before you go as their rules for pets on board may differ - there will also be an additional charge.
What you need before your pet goes camping
Check the campsite pet rules before you go: Most dog friendly campsites will require your pet to be kept on a leash at all times while on the campsite grounds and for you to clean up after them. Be mindful if you have vocal pups, it’s expected that you be considerate of other guests and keep noise to a minimum.
Packing for your pooch: While you can always buy dog food and supplies when you get there you can make your holiday a little easier if you remember a few of the essentials: lead (and muzzle if required), carry case for smaller dogs, dishes, basket and doggy bags. Just don’t forget their favourite blanket or toy.
Microchip: If your pet isn’t already microchipped, this is the first thing you need to look into doing. Microchips aren’t only useful for when you’re travelling abroad, they can also make it easier to recover your precious pet if they get lost at home.
Pet insurance: Before you go, check whether your pet insurance policy is valid overseas. Simply check your documents or call your insurer to ask them whether or not overseas cover is included.
Pet passports and vaccinations: Thanks to the EU Pet Travel Scheme*, you can travel with your dog to and from EU countries provided they hold a valid Pet Passport. This is a record of all of the vaccinations and other procedures (rabies vaccination, tapeworm treatment etc.) that your dog has had to show that they are fit to travel. You can get your pooch his or her own Passport from an Official Veterinarian (OV) at least 21 days before travel.
What about Brexit? Depending on the final details of how the UK exits the EU under Brexit, the Pet Travel Scheme may be subject to change. If we exit with a deal agreed in March 2019, we should avoid any changes to requirements. However, in a no deal scenario, pet-owners will need to plan ahead and speak to an Official Veterinarian (OV) at least four months before you want to travel. For more information and the full details on taking your dog abroad visit Gov.uk.
Please note: in general, dogs of category 1 and 2 are not accepted and vaccination records must be presented. Additional campsite restrictions do vary and onsite charges will apply. Our knowledgeable team will be able to book your dog friendly holiday and guide you on any restrictions your chosen campsite may have.
