Things to do when camping in Correze

Correze is a destination that beckons us to peel back the layers and go in search of beauty, intrigue and inspiration, whether that’s in the department’s gorgeous countryside or captivating towns and villages.

If getting out and about to explore beautiful natural surroundings is your idea of the perfect camping holiday in Correze, then head to the sprawling splendour of the Millevaches Plateau. An area of unspoiled green countryside, the plateau’s terrain is excellent for walking and hiking trips, whether you follow trails along meandering rivers, through lovely woodland or in green valleys. There is a deluge of lakes in the area, where a feast of water sports is available. Enjoy fishing, kayaking, swimming and sailing on Lake Bariousses, Lake Chammet, Oussines Pond and Lake Vassivièr.

Equally captivating landscapes await visitors to the upper valley of the Dordogne, and are especially savoured by walkers who follow well-trodden paths through gently rolling meadows and fields, along rivers and around lakes.

Dramatic gorges that plunge deeply into the terrain are the highlight of time spent following the flow of the Vézère River. The river sets the scene for all manner of river sports including white water rafting, canoeing, canyoning and much more. Campers can also appreciate fantastic natural landscapes and wonders at the Fage Chasm, Monédières Massif and the Gimel and Murel Waterfalls.

The villages and towns of the department seem to have stood in place for as long as the landscapes themselves, and are bursting with history, culture and no shortage of charm. Among the very best hamlets in the region, a few carry the envious accolade of “France’s Most Beautiful Villages”.

The beautiful red sandstones buildings of Collonges-la-Rouge are a striking contrast to the green countryside wrapping around the confines of this medieval former fiefdom. Among the best attractions worth visiting while wandering the narrow-cobbled streets are the Maison de la Sirène (Mermaid House) and the Chapel of the Penitents.

The lovely town of Turenne lies close to Correze’s southern border with Lot, and features a wealth of medieval buildings including the Canon’s House and Seneschal's House, but it is the town’s 13th century castle that remains its most popular attraction. The town also makes a great base for sightseeing opportunities in the surrounding area, namely for side trips to the Fage Chasm and Causse Lake.
